On the evening of the twenty-first of July, seventeen hundred and eighty-one, a party of Refugees embarked at Lloyd's Neck, on Long Island, and landed on the Connecticut shore the same night. The party concealed themselves in a wood, about five miles from the place where they landed, and near the meeting-house of the town of Middlesex. Here they lay until two o'clock in the afternoon of the next day, " when the good people of Middlesex were assembled, and devoutly praying for their great and good ally, the King of France, the brave party surrounded their sanctuary, and took from thence fifty notorious rebels; their reverend teacher at their head. Their horses, forty in number, saddled and at hand, were taken care of at the same time. The whole were moved in the most expeditious manner to the shore, during which the rebels, in the vicinity of Middlesex, collected and harassed the soldiers in their return, notwithstanding which, every rebel and every horse captured were safely conducted on board the armed vessels, which returned to |
